Brian Chanen
Brian Chanen is an International Educator with over 25 years’ experience teaching in Italy, Egypt, Thailand, Poland, India, Laos and Vietnam. Brian has a B.A. in English from Williams College, an MAT in English/Education at Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Warsaw.
After teaching and examining for English A since the late 90’s, Brian became Deputy Chief Examiner of Language A1 English in 2004. Since then, Brian was a key member of the curriculum review team that designed the first Language and Literature course, has designed and led workshops and webinars for teachers and examiners, has worked as a paper setter and has continued in his role as the principal examiner of paper two. Brian was a part of the curriculum review team that designed the new suite of courses in Studies in Language and Literature and was the editor of the Prescribed Reading List for English. Brian is also the developer of the subject specific seminar for the Language and Literature course and the Category 2 workshop for the literature course.
While Brian is passionate about and deeply involved in IB studies in Language and Literature and its underlying philosophy, he is adamant that IB English does not involve a different kind of teaching but is grounded in research, reflection and continuous growth that is relevant to all curriculums. Most importantly, he is adamant about not being adamant--the study, teaching (and examination) of Language and Literature necessarily embraces ambiguity, doubt and multiple perspectives.
Along with Rob Allison, Brian has written the previous edition of the course book and the Skills and Practice book for Language and Literature. Rob and Brian also edited the Perspectives on Planning book for both the Literature and the Language and Literature course. In addition to this Brian has published a number of articles on Postmodern American Literature and narrative theory.
Currently, Brian is a faculty member at British University Vietnam and is the associate director of the University’s new Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching where the focus is on training and professional development opportunities for Vietnamese educators.
