The learner has an intrinsic moral worth, and the potential to flourish in a unique and distinctive way.
Dr Robert Bowie taught in schools in the UK, Turkey and Japan for eight years before moving to higher education teaching and research. His interest in the study of religion and ethics began as an undergraduate at the University of Warwick with its multi-religious chaplaincy. He spent time visiting eastern Europe just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Lancaster University’s reputation for its distinctive, inter-disciplinary approach to Religious Studies beckoned and encouraged him to teach in Muslim and Buddhist countries, which fuelled his curiosity for all religions and religious experiences in the west and the east.
As a secondary RE teacher, he taught religious ethics in Kent and went on to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students at Canterbury Christ Church University, where he also carries out research into human rights and religion, and religious education. He currently works with RE teachers from schools across Kent and the Southeast of England, speaks at conferences for students of all ages, teachers and academics. He has been publishing A Level textbooks for 10 years. At the heart of his work is the idea that the learner has an intrinsic moral worth, and the potential to flourish in a unique and distinctive way. The purpose of education is found in enabling this transformation and realization of human potential.
Robert is currently writing our brand new course for the new OCR 2016 specification: Oxford A Level Religious Studies for OCR.
