Complete support for AQA's new linear specifications
'Core Maths' is a collective noun for a set of brand new qualifications aimed at post-16 students who have achieved at least a grade C in GCSE maths. The qualifications allow students to carry on with maths beyond GCSE, as an alternative to A Level. The result of the 2-year course is a Level 3 qualification, similar to an AS.
The Core Maths courses offered by various awarding bodies are all quite different to each other. However, the content for each qualification is approximately 80% GCSE knowledge and 20% at a higher level, mainly AS and A Level knowledge. The courses aim to develop maths skills by involving real-life contexts, such as finance and engineering, as well as a major emphasis on problem-solving. The courses can also be used as support for other post-16 subjects that require maths knowledge, such as Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology, Economics and Information Technology.
Core Maths has been widely available for first teaching since September 2015, with first examinations in Summer 2017. A limited pilot has been running from September 2014 with first examinations Summer 2016.
The qualifications are going to be offered by the following exam boards under the following titles:
Yes. Many universities and employers have already shown support for the qualifications, and are encouraging students who are not looking to take a maths A Level to consider Core Maths as an alternative. Completing a Core Maths qualification will also provide up to 60 UCAS points towards university entrance, as well as counting towards the 16-19 performance accountability measure for schools.
Oxford University Press is publishing resources for AQA's Mathematical Studies specification including a Student Book and free online teacher resources. These are available now. The Core Maths Support Programme also offers resources to support this new qualification.
There is lots of support available for non-maths teachers who may be looking to deliver the qualification. The AQA Mathematical Studies resources published by Oxford University Press have dedicated teacher notes to support lesson preparation, as well as dedicated Maths Skills resources for Business Studies, Economics and Science to support students doing Core Maths alongside their other subjects. There is also links to the popular MyMaths website to provide extra support and consolidation of maths skills.
