Wendy Meddour : Children's: Oxford University Press

As a child, Wendy spent most of my time in the airing cupboard, reading good books. Huddled up behind the boiler, she dreamt of being a cartoonist, a comedienne and a football player. But she didn’t know how to go about it. So she became an English lecturer instead – one that gave funny lectures, doodled in the margins and knew the odd-side rule.

Since leaving the safety of the airing cupboard, she has acquired a doctorate, an Algerian husband, four children, a wobbly old house in Wiltshire, a farm in the Berber mountains and a huge cat called Socrates (that many suspect is actually a goat). She spent a long time teaching English at Oxford University – but took ‘a little break’ to write and illustrate children’s books. (The ‘little break’ has turned into a ‘big break’ – nobody told her it was going to be such good fun!)

Wendy’s daughter, Mina May, is a fantastically talented illustrator, and provided the artwork for Wendy’s hilarious Wendy Quill series at the age of 11!
