Ian Dorton taught Social Sciences for 41 years. He has taught Economics, Business & Management, and Theory of Knowledge, as well as dabbling in junior mathematics and PE. He taught in England, at Berkhamsted School and then Sevenoaks School, from 1975 to 1997, where he combined the roles of Head of Department along with being a housemaster.
From 1997 to 2003, Ian moved to Asia, where he was the Head of Economics and Business at the United World College of South-East Asia, in Singapore. He then returned to Europe and taught at the American International School in Vienna, from 2003 to 2017.
Originally from London, England, Ian received a degree in Administrative Sciences from Aston University in Birmingham, followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from Birmingham University. He originally trained as a chartered accountant, but his love of economics took him along the path of teaching, which he has never regretted.
Ian has led IB Economics workshops in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. He has been an examiner for the IB since 1988. He has been a Deputy Chief Examiner, Principal Examiner, and Team Leader for IB Economics and has been involved in the last four syllabus reviews.
Today, when Ian is not busy marking and team leading for the IB, he enjoys the warm weather of southern Spain. Ian is the author, along with his wife Jocelyn Blink, of the OUP Course Companion for Economics.
