Originally from Canada, Jocelyn earned a degree in Economics and Political Studies at Queen’s University, where she also gained her Bachelor of Education degree. Upon graduating from university, Jocelyn worked as a volunteer teacher in Nigeria, where she was able to appreciate first hand the challenges of economic development. After five years of teaching Maths, Geography and Economics in a Canadian boarding school, Jocelyn moved to Austria where she taught at the Vienna International School for 26 years. She says her best teaching experience was teaching her own twin sons IB Economics. Now that they are both teachers themselves, she thinks it can’t have been all bad.
Jocelyn began working with the IB as an examiner in 1993. Since that time, she has been a workshop leader, Team Leader, Deputy Chief Examiner and Principal Examiner. She has also been actively involved in curriculum development. Jocelyn’s favourite part about the IB Economics course is the way that it encourages students to think outside their own spheres and become active learners who engage with real world issues. Having taught the IB Economics course to more than 700 young adults, she is thrilled to see how many are using their education to bring about positive changes in the world.
Jocelyn is now living in Spain with her husband and co-author, Ian Dorton. Now that they are not teaching full-time, they are enjoying learning Spanish and finally being able to have a dog, who is named Rebel. They also love having the time to travel to be with their children Niki, Caroline, Ben and Nick and their grandchildren, Wesley and Samaya.
