Writing History books and sharing her own love of the subject with young people fulfils an ambition which Sally has nurtured ever since she read History at Oxford University. It therefore seems appropriate that she is now back in her educational birthplace, editing and writing History books for Oxford University Press.
Sally has had a rewarding career as a History teacher, working in a number of both state and private secondary schools and colleges, and currently teaching History at the Cheltenham Ladies' College. She has examining experience and in the course of her career has been involved in the provision of teacher inset, and the work of professional bodies seeking to advance the teaching of History in schools and in curriculum development.
Like most historians, she is sometimes asked what her 'specialist period' is, but she finds this question difficult to answer. Having taught, examined and read about almost all eras of History, she invariably finds herself completely immersed in whatever period it is that she is researching. She has a huge breadth of knowledge and a keen awareness of 'what makes History tick'; for her, it is the endlessly repeated patterns constantly played out in differing contexts, that engages her interest as a Historian. She believes that, if she can impart just a little of her own enthusiasm to the young historians of today, she will have done something immeasurably worthwhile.
